Adding or Modifying Language Translations
The "Prefs | Language" option lets you select a language for the
user interface of VueScan. Each language is desribed by a file
named language.xx, where xx is one of the two-letter codes below.
Each line in the language.xx file is the translation of the
corresponding line in the language.en file.
To modify an existing languge translation, edit the language.xx file
with a text editor that can modify Unicode (UTF8) strings. Don't use Microsoft Word
to edit these files - it won't work. On Windows, use notepad.exe to
edit and on Mac OS X, use TextEdit (in the Applications folder).
Put language.en in a window on the left side of your screen
and language.xx on the right side of your screen. Set the editor so the
text doesn't wrap and each line on the left will match the line on the right.
If you only have a limited amount of time, edit sections 00, 01, 02, 07, 09, 11, 13, 15 and 16.
These are the most visible parts of the user interface (buttons, menus, tabs, etc.)
and it's only 319 lines to edit. This should take a native speaker an hour or two,
and it will significantly improve the translation. You'll get a free
Standard Edition license if you update the google translation for these 319 lines.
If you translate the whole file (1100 lines, 6000 words), you'll get a free
Professional Edition license.
The language.xx files are located at:
- Mac OS X - in VueScan.app/Contents/Data/language.xx
- Windows - in c:\vuescan\language.xx
- Linux - in the same directory as the vuescan executable
To add a new laguage translation, copy language.en to language.xx and
edit language.xx for the new language.
Before you start work on a translation, check the translation
status below to see if someone else is already working on it
and send e-mail to edhamrick@aol.com so the translation status
can be updated.
Please send this translation to edhamrick@aol.com and it will be added
to the next release of VueScan. When you e-mail it, please send
it as a .zip attachment, not as inline text.
